Florida State Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell has bolstered his staff with the addition of former Texas and Houston head coach Tom Herman. The move comes as Norvell prepares to take over play-calling duties in 2026, following the retirement of offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn.
Herman brings a wealth of experience to Tallahassee, having led Houston to a 22-4 record from 2015-2016, including a 13-1 season in 2015 that culminated in a 38-24 Peach Bowl victory over Florida State. His success earned him AAC Coach of the Year honors. At Texas, Herman compiled a 32-18 record, securing four consecutive bowl victories, including a 10-4 season in 2018.
With the Seminoles set to open the 2026 season against New Mexico State on August 29, Herman’s offensive expertise could be crucial. He has a track record of developing quarterbacks, including Greg Ward Jr. at Houston and Sam Ehlinger at Texas. Norvell will need that experience as he guides quarterback Ashton Daniels, who has shown promise but struggled with ball security.
Herman’s role remains undefined, but his offensive mindset could help Florida State maximize its talent, including receivers Duce Robinson and Machai Danzy, and running backs Ousmane Kromah and Quintrevion Wisner. The Seminoles will look to build on their recent success under Norvell, who has shown a knack for identifying and developing talent.
